Nokia 9 PureView: News, Rumors, Features, Camera
How excited would you be for a new Nokia smartphone with the PureView name attached to it? Potentially, the rumored Nokia 9 may indeed bring back the PureView name, and with it an amazing five-lens camera. While many of the earlier rumors about it actually applied to the Nokia 8 Sirocco, and nothing about the Nokia 9 PureView is certain — including the release date — there’s still plenty of information for us to go on. Here’s what you need to know.
Design
What will the Nokia 9 look like? While there have been rumors of both a dual-lens, and a triple-lens camera on the back, more rumors are gathering about a penta-lens setup. That’s right, five camera lenses, plus an additional two sensor and flash units for a total of seven rings, may end up defining the look of the Nokia 9. The renders here give us a good look at how striking the Nokia 9 may be with this design.
A now-deleted teaser image published by an authorized Nokia dealer in Malaysia also showed a phone with this design, calling it the Nokia 9 PureView, with the promotional tagline, “powered by light,” hinting at strong low-light camera performance. The phone pictured closely resembles the other five-lens Nokia 9 concepts.
It’s not the only possibility. The phone has been illustrated with a triple-camera array, and a dual-lens camera too. The same report says the Nokia 9 will feature an edge-to-edge 3D glass display, and no capacitive touch buttons. These photos show a blue and orange model, and an edge-to-edge 3D-glass and bezel-less display.
Release and name
We don’t know when, or even if, the Nokia 9 will be released, although it’s suggested the announcement has been moved from the end of 2018 to the beginning of 2019. We’re also not entirely sure what the name will be, but it may be the first to revive the classic PureView name, once given to Nokia’s very best camera phones. This has also been leaked by a Nokia dealer in Malaysia, which posted about a Nokia 9 PureView on its Facebook page. The device supposedly has the code name Olympic, due to the five camera rings.
Camera
The Nokia 9 has been leaked with a whopping five camera lenses on the back. The penta-lens setup has been seen in leaked images with Zeiss branding, and Zeiss patented a camera zoom system that looks very similar to what we can see on this phone, according to a report from The Verge. Some reports note that the leaked phone may not end up being the Nokia 9, but rather another handset called the Nokia 10.
No specifications for the five camera setup have been leaked. Early rumors stated the Nokia 9 would feature a dual-camera setup, but those rumors actually referred to the Nokia 8 Sirocco. The front-facing camera may come in at 21 megapixels and feature a pretty impressive f/1.8 aperture.
Specifications
What about the Nokia 9’s power and specification? Leaks so far have been accompanied by images of a device that’s different to the Nokia 9 with five camera lenses, therefore we should take the following information as unlikely for now. It’s said the Nokia 9 will pack a 6.01-inch AMOLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, a Snapdragon 845 processor, a 3,950mAh battery, and a dual-SIM slot. A total of 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage capacity is possible, with Geekbench also reporting the Nokia 9 will feature 8GB of RAM. These results can be faked, of course. An in-display fingerprint reader is also possible.
Software
The Nokia 8 will likely run Android 8.1 Oreo, Android One edition. Earlier this year at MWC, HMD confirmed that all upcoming Nokia devices, with the exception of the Nokia 2, would be part of the Android One program. Data spotted on a firmware website showed a phone code name Olympic — which has already been associated with the Nokia 9 — running Android 9.0 Pie.
